ATS-Friendly Resume Format: The Exact Layout That Parses Cleanly
An ATS turns your resume into plain text, then matches keywords. If the layout scrambles that conversion, the keywords never get read. This is the layout that parses cleanly, every time.
The skeleton that passes
YOUR NAME
Phone | Email | City, State | LinkedIn URL
SUMMARY
2-3 lines: role + strongest tools + one quantified result.
EXPERIENCE
Job Title — Company, City | Jun 2022 - Present
- Bullet with a keyword, an action and a number.
- Second bullet, same structure.
EDUCATION
Degree, Major — University, City | Year
SKILLS
Grouped keywords: Tools: A, B, C | Methods: X, Y, Z
Copy the skeleton, keep it one page, and every section heading stays exactly that standard word — that is what the parser looks for.
Format rules that matter
1
One column onlyTwo-column layouts interleave text when parsed. One column reads top to bottom in the same order you wrote it.
2
No tables, text boxes, or graphicsMost parsers handle them badly or drop them entirely. A skills "graphic" is a missed keyword, not a design win.
3
Standard section headingsUse exactly: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications. Creative headings ("My Journey") may not be recognized as sections.
4
Consistent date formatPick "Jun 2022 - Present" or "2022-2024" and use it everywhere. Mixed formats make the parser guess your timeline.
5
Plain fonts, standard sizesArial, Calibri, or Helvetica at 10-12pt. Unusual fonts and tiny text can break character extraction.
6
No headers or footers for contentPut contact info in the body, not the page header/footer — that area is the first thing parsers misread or drop.
The format trap
Bad: a colorful two-column resume with a skills wheel graphic, dates in the footer, and "About Me" as the first section.
Good: the same content, one column, standard headings, dates beside roles, keywords in the bullets.
Design templates sell to applicants, not to ATS systems. If your resume looks like an infographic, the parser is probably losing half of it.
Tip: run your resume against a real job description in ATSCheck — if keywords from the posting show up in your report, the format is parsing fine.
Frequently asked questions
Is a creative resume ever better for ATS?
For design or creative roles, a visual portfolio matters — but the ATS still needs the text. Keep the parsed text clean (one column) and let the portfolio carry the visual proof separately.
Should my resume be one page?
For most roles under 10 years of experience, yes. Two pages only when a second page genuinely adds value — never to repeat skills.
Do ATS systems read PDFs correctly?
Most modern ATS read text-based PDFs well, but DOCX and plain text are the safest. Avoid PDFs generated from scanned images or design tools that output flattened graphics.
